BLUE ENVELOPE PROGRAM

The Sea Isle City Police Department is proudly partnering with the Cape May County Prosecutor's Office in Cape May County's BLUE ENVELOPE PROGRAM.

The Blue Envelope Program was created to facilitate safer and helpful communication between Law Enforcement Officers and individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) during traffic stops, providing those drivers with a blue envelope containing essential information and instructions for law enforcement during a traffic stop.

The overall scope of the program will be to reduce stress and anxiety for individuals with ASD by improving communication and understanding between drivers and officers. The program works by providing the Blue Envelope to those with Autism Spectrum Disorder, which is completely voluntary. The following items may be placed inside of the envelope: Driver’s License, Vehicle Registrations, Current Insurance Card and Emergency Contact information.

When an officer conducts a motor vehicle stop and the driver identifies himself/herself with ASD, the driver may hand the officer the blue envelope. Upon receipt of the envelope, the officer will ensure that the interaction is smooth and provide clear instructions to avoid any confusion. This initiative will streamline communication, with the guidelines printed on the envelope that offer practical tips for officers, making it easier for them to communicate effectively with individuals with ASD even in high-stress situations like traffic stops.

**Blue Envelopes can be picked up in the lobby of the Sea Isle City Police Department at the Records window during normal business hours **

Co-sponsored by the Cape May County Chiefs of Police Association, Autism New Jersey & Cooper University Healthcare. Additional information is available at https://www.cmcpros.net/community-page/474
